Welcome
Welcome to the February Yorsay, After a cold start to the year warmed up by our Covenant Services no doubt . Please feel free to contribute to Yorsay during 2009. [Contact communications@yorkhullmethodist.org.uk ] Items to be received before the 25th of each Month.
I produce as much as possible of items but to save space and time downloading, some items will link you to the District Web site or other sites for fuller information. It would be nice to have stories from Churches either good or bad that we can let the rest of the District know about.

HELP PLEASE
There has been a suggestion made that the e-mail of Yorsay just contains the highlights and has a link to the pdf copy rather than send the full version out via e mail attachment.
Please let me know your preference via e –mail as above and which ever is the majority will be the way Yorsay is sent out in future months.
.

Yorsay is not only meant for those who receive it via thier e mail address it is hoped that at least one person in each church will copy it and make it available to All members of the congregation via notice boards or through church newsletters.

NEWS RELEASES
A recent problem has been noticed with News releases from Methodist Church House that affect the Churches in the District. Several people say that they have not seen the News release. We suggest that you [especially Clergy and Local Preachers ] check http://www.yorkhullmethodist.org.uk/news.php?id=56 at least once a week for the latest News releases or sign up for the PAT News service that relays all the News releases from MCH. http://www.yorkhullmethodist.org.uk/newsletter/newsletter.php

Re-opening of Wolds' Valley Methodist Church.

The farming villages along the Great Wolds valley Wolds each once had their own chapel. Now only the one at Weverthorpe remains. The Sherburn Circuit and the small local church discussed whether to allow the chapel to continue to run down or to spend money on refurbishment in an attempt to re-vitalise our witness in the area. Bravely they decided on the latter. The chapel has been completely refurbished with new windows, doors and Notice Board. Facilities for people with a disability, new kitchen chairs, heaters and carpeting. It even has a new name to recognise its place beyond the village and the support the circuit gives. WOLDS VALLEY METHODIST CHURCH.

It is hoped to supplement worship with a regular Coffee drop in on 'Post Office Days' and the premises would make an excellent venue for quiet Day or Away Day in a beautiful rural setting.

Re-opening weekend first weekend in February.
Saturday 7th from 10.00 am Open for Viewing
, 2.00 pm Rally and Re-dedication
Sunday 8th @ 3.00 pm Worship with a Songs of Praise weekend.

Saturday January 31st 2009 St Martin’s, Coney Street, York: Workshop on Peace and Reconciliation
In April 2008 we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the re-hallowing of St Martin's. The service looked back to the bombing of the church in 1942 and forward to its emerging ministry of justice, peace and reconciliation today.
On Saturday January 31st 2009, Simon Keyes will be coming from St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace in London to run a workshop for us on the ministry of reconciliation and what this might mean for St Martin’s.
The morning will begin as usual with the 10am Eucharist followed by coffee. All welcome. Those who have registered for the workshop are invited to arrive from 10.45am. The workshop will then run from 11am to 1pm and a sandwich lunch will be provided for those able to stay.
We hope that anyone who is interested in helping St Martin’s develop its ministry of reconciliation will be able to come. It would be most helpful if initial interest could be registered with Sue Norton by January 9th. Places are limited.

A couple of years ago we celebrated 200 years since William Wilberforce put through a Bill outlawing Slavery. It took nearly 30 years for the law to become a reality on the high seas. But it is rightly seen as a milestone in the freedom and the dignity of each individual no matter what colour or creed.
It is a shock to the system then to hear that there is slavery in Britain today!
The main areas of slavery are in Domestic, Commercial and Sex trafficking.
It is thought that over 10,000 people are caught up in the Sex tracking business each year in Britain today, some come to these Islands legally, others illegally, often mislead and deceived – tricked by callous people using people as commodities.
Its not just in Britain, this is a worldwide business than is in every town in this country – using mainly women and girl for sexual exploitation. It is a degrading and in-human business, the nature of sex-trafficking is a hidden, criminal trade of people – an underground activity, and for this reason it is very difficult to asses the numbers involved in this crime. Worldwide, the International Labour Organisation in 2005, estimates that at least 2.4 Million people have been trafficked

St Ann Teresa heard of this scandalous problem that exists on our streets and was determined to do something about it. She appealed to Religious women and men to rally round. Eventually, the Meadville Trust was formed. It is a Registered Charity and its aim is to help women, young men and children who have been freed from sex trafficking – helping to regain their sense of dignity and self-worth. This is done by providing safe housing and offering opportunities for physical and psychological healing and rehabilitation. At the same time the Medaille Trust raises awareness of the plight of those who are enslaved and exploited in the sex-trafficking industry in the UK and actively campaigns on this issue.

The Medaille Trust joins with other charities too – and makes it very clear that
‘Women are not for sale’ People are made in the image of God, and we are called to enable that image to grow, develop, and be reflected in all our lives, for everyone, no matter what their age, race or creed or gender!

A startling development in the last three years is that over 100 young people have been trafficked in British cities for exploitation – under our very noses!

Sister Ann Teresa’s message is alarming and uncomfortable. The worst thing we can do – is NOTHING.

The Cross and Passion Sisters at their Retreat House The Briery in Ilkley are hosting a day with Sr Ann Teresa on Sex Trafficking on Wednesday April 22nd 2009 10am-4pm.
Tea and coffee breaks and 3-course lunch – suggested offering £20 for the day.

American Inauguration
The Inauguration of Barak Obama as 44th President of the United States was highlighted by the Benediction given by United Methodist minister and Civil Rights Campaigner Rev Joseph Lowery. His Benediction is printed below.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who has brought us thus far along the way, thou who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee. Shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand -- true to thee, O God, and true to our native land.

We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we've shared this day. We pray now, O Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant, Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration. He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national and, indeed, the global fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hand, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations. Our faith does not shrink, though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.

For we know that, Lord, you're able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor or the least of these and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.

We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that, yes, we can work together to achieve a more perfect union. And while we have sown the seeds of greed -- the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.

And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.

And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.

Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little, angelic Sasha and Malia.

We go now to walk together, children, pledging that we won't get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone, with your hands of power and your heart of love.

Help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid; when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around -- (laughter) -- when yellow will be mellow -- (laughter) -- when the red man can get ahead, man -- (laughter) -- and when white will embrace what is right.

Let all those who do justice and love mercy say amen.

AUDIENCE: Amen!

REV. LOWERY: Say amen --

AUDIENCE: Amen!

REV. LOWERY: -- and amen.

AUDIENCE: Amen! (Cheers, applause.)

END.
